5 Exercises that burn more calories than running
Running is one of my favorite things to do, you can just get your kit on, step out of your front door and go. Granted that not all places in Dubai are pedestrianised but it gets better every year and there are loads of places to stride it out.
That said, are there better ways to spend your time if fat loss is your goal? The answer is yes. At the average pace, a plod around the park/sand dune will burn about 10 Calories per minute. This is great and even better if you are sprinting of course, but how many of you do? Exactly.
So what exercises are more calorie intensive per minute?
High intensity resistance training has been proven to burn up to 71 percent more calories than originally thought by one university in the US. Which suggests that a fast-paced circuit workout burns as many calories as running at a 6-minute per mile pace.
Burpees

I know, I know, I can hear those of you familiar with burpees swearing at the screen already but they really are a great exercise. If you look at it, a burpee is one of the most simple of human movements, you are literally lying on your front and then jumping up again. Now if you struggle with this movement it’s probably time to change your lifestyle in one way or another… I’m confident that if our caveman ancestors couldn’t do a burpee then we’d probably all be fossilized saber tooth tiger shit by now. An 80kg person burns approximately 1.43 calories per burpee so those of you that are banging out 15 in a minute are burning twice the calories of the guy running on the treadmill next to you.
Battleropes

My personal cryptonite. Battleropes kill me but it’s always worth it. And again you don’t need expensive state of the art equipment, just a good old fashioned piece of rope, that’s one of the things I love about them. In a recent College of New Jersey study comparing various workout styles, battle rope exercises came in first in terms of total oxygen consumption.
Skipping

Ever wondered why you were so fit and trim at school ladies? Of course I’m joking but skipping really is a fantastic calorie burner coming in at 13.1 calories burned per minute, that’s if you can spend more time jumping over the rope than with it tangled around your trainers like me. It’s still better than running though and you don’t need to leave your front room.
Sled Pushing

Anyone that has been to our Transform class will know exactly how tough pushing a sled is. It’s really tough. You can see why professional athletes around the globe use this technique to increase strength, power and speed. All of these fitness increases are a great bi product for us at Transform but it is the fat burning properties that we are using it for. You can burn up to 20 calories per minute of sled pushing putting it right up there for best calorie burning exercise along with the rest of the heavy weights on this list.
Kettlebell Swings

Penny Dropped yet?
The penny now might have dropped with regards to why we choose the exercises we do during our Transform classes. We use all of the above in our sessions and for a reason. To guarantee fat loss as we do, we need to make sure that our class packs a serious calorie burning punch and that’s how we have seen some of you burning 1000 calories in just one hour. Try getting that from Zumba…
I’m not saying stop running because running is a great fat burning tool but if fat loss is your goal you could get quicker results by introducing some of these exercises into your routine or even better come and join us at a Transform class.
See you all soon.
